Ben's Chili Bowl

We had a brief trip to DC this week so made a short list of new things to see and do. At the top of it was visiting Ben's Chili Bowl at U Street and 13th. We first heard of this place through one of our favorite shows on the Travel Channel, "Man vs. Food."  You must click the link now to see why this is such a famous place.  It was opened in 1958 in the U St Corridor of DC, survived through generations of change in DC, and has been visited by Bill Cosby and Barack Obama.  At the counter where you place orders, there is a sign:

"Who Eats Free at Ben's:
Bill Cosby
The Obama Family
No One Else"

We got off the plane at Reagan National at noon and immediately got on the Metro to head to Ben's. I had a bowl of the vegetarian chili, very tasty. My hubby who was somewhat hungrier ordered a chili dog, turkey burger, and fries (which we shared). It was a busy lunch crowd but fast and extremely friendly service. We stopped upstairs to buy some souvenirs afterwards before heading off to the monuments and Mall.
